Attorney Michael Mundaca’s broad knowledge of tax law and tax policy has led him to the top of his field in both the private and the public sectors. Since 2011, he has served the international accounting firm EY as co-director of its National Tax Department and its Americas Tax Center. Previously at EY, Michael Mundaca was a principal with its International Tax Services group, in Washington, DC.
Before taking on his present co-director role, Mr. Mundaca served the United States Treasury Department as Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy following his appointment to the post by President Obama. In this position, he led the department’s Office of Tax Policy while advising Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on all areas of federal taxation. Mr. Mundaca gained additional experience in the public sector between 1997 and 2002 as a member of the Treasury Department’s Tax Policy Office, ultimately serving as Deputy International Tax Counsel. His public sector work has included representing the United States at several international forums, such as the OECD and European Union.
Michael Mundaca studied philosophy and physics at Columbia University in New York City, ultimately achieving a bachelor of arts. He holds a master of arts in philosophy from the University of Chicago and legal degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Miami.
